Cathedral 9 Slot Review – Darkness, Devotion, and Hidden Treasures
Thu Oct 23, 2025
Scatter pay slots are everywhere these days. It feels like every developer wants a piece of that action — and who can blame them? ELK Studios, known for keeping things interesting without overdoing trends, has already dabbled in scatter pays with titles like Hula Balua, Ashoka, and Mine Defender. But apparently, the temptation was too strong to resist again, because the studio has returned to that familiar format with Cathedral 9 — a game that merges ELK’s moody aesthetics with some of its most creative mechanics.
A Cathedral Shrouded in Shadows
Forget the bright stained glass and angelic choirs you might expect from a cathedral — Cathedral 9 takes players into a darker, more unsettling space. Statues lurk in the walls, and steam rises from piles of rocks scattered across the stone floor. Somewhere beneath it all lie coffins said to be “overflowing with unimaginable treasure.”
When the free spins begin, the tone lightens a little, but overall, this is a heavy, gothic experience, more in line with ELK’s darker titles like Phoenix Graveyard, Phoenix Graveyard 2, and Nightmaker.
Game Overview
- Developer: ELK Studios
- Reels/Grid: 6×5
- Mechanic: Scatter pays (8+ matching symbols anywhere on the grid)
- Volatility: Medium to High
- RTP: 94%
- Bet Range: €0.20 – €100 per spin
- Max Win: 25,000x the bet
Wins occur when 8 or more identical symbols land anywhere in view, paying between 0.1x and 2x for smaller clusters, and up to 50x for 25 or more symbols. Larger symbols (2×2, 3×3, 4×4) can appear, paying for every 1×1 space they occupy — and when they replicate, they fill gaps below them with matching smaller symbols. Wilds can substitute for any pay symbol, and a full wild cluster awards the game’s top payout.
If ELK Studios is known for anything, it’s loading its slots with layered mechanics — and Cathedral 9 doesn’t disappoint.
Feature Reel
Above the main grid sits a 2×6 Feature Reel, which drops special symbols or blanks into the play area. After each win, the feature symbols can fall into the empty spaces, and new symbols cascade in — a process that continues as long as wins keep forming.
Collector & Explosion Symbols
When no further wins occur, Collector symbols can activate, gathering all instances of one pay symbol into a single cell (though symbols inside coffins remain untouched). Meanwhile, Explosion symbols blast away their own column and adjacent ones, clearing the board for a new cascade.
Mystery Coffins & Global Multiplier
Coffins are at the heart of the game. When a Mystery Coffin reaches the bottom, it reveals matching symbols or wilds. These coffins keep nudging down and revealing new symbols until no more wins occur.
- Super Coffins also increase a global multiplier (up to x1,000) that remains active for the duration of the current spin or bonus round.
- Mini Coffins can spawn new Mystery Coffins above them, creating chain reactions.
Entombed & Super Entombed
When an Entombed symbol covers the full feature reel and no wins remain, it transforms all symbols on the grid into one matching symbol type. The Super Entombed variant guarantees a high or mid-value symbol for even bigger potential wins.
Holy Collect
This feature can randomly trigger on any spin. As energy builds from falling “holy blockers,” the feature eventually activates, adding 3–6 coffins to the grid. Its progress carries over between rounds, maintaining suspense spin after spin.
Bonus & Super Bonus
Landing 3–6 bonus scatters triggers Free Drops, with each scatter granting 2–4 spins. During free drops, the global multiplier persists between spins, and additional scatters can award extra rounds.
If you manage to win using all 9 symbol types during the bonus, you’ll trigger the Super Bonus, which comes with 2–4 extra spins and 1–6 Super Mystery Coffins on each. Only super coffins appear here, meaning the potential for big multipliers skyrockets.
X-iter Feature Buys
ELK’s X-iter system lets players jump straight into the action:
- Bonus Hunt (2.5x) – Over 3x the chance of triggering free spins.
- Mega Bonus Hunt (10x) – 10x better odds of landing the bonus.
- Coffin Drop (50x) – Starts with 1–6 random mystery coffins.
- Bonus Buy (100x) – Instantly triggers the Free Drops.
- Super Bonus Buy (500x) – Jump straight into the Super Bonus.
A Dark Masterpiece from ELK
Cathedral 9 feels like a showcase of everything ELK Studios does best — moody atmospheres, layered features, and a perfect blend of risk and reward. The church-inspired visuals and haunting choral soundtrack create an eerie yet immersive mood, while the scatter pays mechanic ensures every spin feels dynamic.
The game’s real thrill lies in chaining together multiple features — when coffins, multipliers, and feature symbols start interacting, Cathedral 9 truly comes alive. The Entombed mechanic adds extra drama, turning the whole grid into one symbol type, while Super Coffins can boost multipliers to astonishing levels.
While it doesn’t necessarily push ELK into new territory, Cathedral 9 is a confident, feature-rich production with impressive potential — up to 25,000x your stake. If you enjoy dark themes, avalanche mechanics, and scatter pay chaos, this cathedral is well worth stepping into.
