NFL Pushes Supreme Court to Intervene in Prediction Market Battle as Kalshi and Polymarket Face Regulatory Showdown

Florida’s latest attack on sweepstakes casinos looks, at first glance, like another familiar regulatory fight. Stake.us is in the crosshairs. So is VGW, the company behind Chumba Casino, LuckyLand and Global Poker.
But the most consequential names in the lawsuits may be the ones players barely notice.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s August lawsuits also name payment companies connected to the platforms, including Worldpay, Trustly, Yodlee, Praxis and Breeze Labs. The state alleges the sweepstakes operators are effectively running illegal online gambling businesses and is seeking injunctions, penalties and recovery of money allegedly lost by Floridians.
That changes the shape of the fight.
Sweepstakes casinos have expanded partly because their model sits outside the conventional US regulated casino system. Players typically buy one virtual currency while receiving another that can potentially be redeemed for prizes.
Operators argue that this structure distinguishes their products from ordinary real-money casinos. Florida argues otherwise.
For players accustomed to conventional online casino offers, that legal distinction can feel abstract. The payment system underneath it is considerably more concrete: money must still travel from a customer’s bank account or card into the platform’s ecosystem.
Florida’s complaints effectively follow that money.
It is a notable development for an industry already dealing with mounting state-level scrutiny. Instead of simply attempting to remove individual websites, authorities are testing whether the infrastructure enabling transactions can itself become part of the enforcement battlefield.
There is a simple reason this strategy matters: casino brands are replaceable. Payment infrastructure is harder to rebuild overnight.
The modern gambling internet depends on an invisible stack of banking connections, processors, verification systems and financial intermediaries. Even crypto casinos ultimately exist within a broader ecosystem of wallets, exchanges and conversion points.
If payment companies decide sweepstakes transactions carry unacceptable legal or compliance risk, regulators may not need to pursue every operator individually.
They could make the business substantially harder to operate.
That does not mean Florida has already established processor liability. In a separate private case involving VGW, Fidelity and Worldpay, a federal judge dismissed Florida-law claims in March 2026 after concluding the complaint failed to adequately plead the necessary elements against the payment defendants.
The new state actions therefore represent a legal test, not a settled blueprint.
This is what makes Florida worth watching beyond America.
Online gambling increasingly resembles the rest of the digital economy: the visible brand gets the attention, but a relatively small number of infrastructure companies keep everything functioning.
Players browsing Spilaviti might compare games, promotions or free-spin offers. Regulators increasingly have another map entirely. They can look at who processes deposits, who supplies technology and where the financial connections converge.
Florida’s lawsuits suggest the next phase of sweepstakes enforcement may happen there.
For years, the sector’s biggest question was whether regulators could successfully shut down individual sweepstakes casinos. The more disruptive question now is whether they even need to.
If enforcement can reach the companies moving the money, America’s sweepstakes casino crackdown may be shifting from a game of whack-a-mole into something much more dangerous for operators: an attack on the plumbing itself.
