Of course, there are many things we will talk about in the form of bonus features in this game, but before we tackle that part of the review, we will take a closer look at the layout, the numbers behind it, and the graphics of this game.

When you open this game, you’ll immediately notice that there’s something a little special going on here. It’s essentially a dual game with an upper and lower reel set, and these function as two separate games in the base gameplay. It might look more complicated than it actually is.

Both of these machines consist of 5 reels with 3 rows each. Each machine has 20 paylines where you can form winning combinations, which is pretty standard for a classic 5×3 slot.

As for the betting range, in this game, you can wager anywhere from 2 ISK to 2,000 ISK per spin. That’s exactly double what you’d normally bet on a Yggdrasil slot—but as I said, this is a dual bet, meaning there’s also the potential for double the action!

Graphics and symbols

As I mentioned, there are two slot machines in one in Age of Asgard, and the upper reels are characterized by god symbols, while the lower reels feature monster symbols—as I said, good versus evil.

Each of the games has 7 regular symbols that can award wins, and in the upper machine, there are 4 with low value and 3 with high value. The 4 lowest-value symbols are standard card symbols often used by Yggdrasil in their games: clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades. There are three goddesses that make up the most valuable symbols, with the goddess on the red background being the highest-paying symbol.

If you land 5 of these in a winning combination, you walk away with a payout of 6 times your bet.

The exact same setup applies in the lower reel, meaning four symbols (different characters) have low value, while three symbols have high value. Jörmungandr (the Midgard Serpent) is the most valuable symbol here, and you also get a win equal to 6 times your bet if you land 5 of these on a payline.

Additionally, we have free spin symbols that trigger free spins, and we’ll come back to those a bit later in the discussion. We also get wilds—these are symbols that act like jokers on the reels and can thus be part of winning combinations alongside the regular symbols mentioned above. The wild symbol is therefore important and can help us complete or extend winning combinations.

Stablede wilds

In the base game, both wild symbols on the two reel sets can appear as 3 high symbols. As mentioned, these substitute for all regular symbols and can nudge randomly to fill entire reels. Nudging means that a wild symbol that is partially visible will move a few steps in one direction or another to fully cover the reel.

When you fill an entire reel with wild symbols on one of the reel sets, you get 1 free respin, and during this respin, the wild symbol remains locked in place.

If you land additional wilds that cover more reels in the same spin, you do not get extra respins—however, as mentioned, any wilds that fully cover a reel will be locked in place for the respin.

If you land a new solid wild during the respin, you get an additional spin. If all reels are filled with locked wilds, you no longer receive more respins, and this will then trigger Ragnarök—the Grand Win—where you win 19,200 coins in the base game and 24,000 coins in the free spins.

Clash!

When you land 2 fixed wilds on the same reel in both the upper and lower reel sets, this will trigger the Clash bonus feature. The Clash feature introduces additional random wilds in the triggering spin. In the following respin, only the locked and fully covered wild symbols remain on the reels.

During the Clash feature, wild symbols cannot land on other wilds, but they can land on high-value symbols. If this happens, all such symbols will be converted into wilds—remember, high-paying symbols can also cover entire reels.

If all reels are covered with wilds, you will not receive any additional wilds.

The number of random wilds awarded is as follows:

• 2 natural fixed wilds grant you 4 extra random wilds on the reels.
• 1 natural fixed wild + 1 nudged solid wild grant you 3 extra random wilds.
• 2 nudged wilds grant you 2 extra random wilds.

Age of Asgard free spins

When you land three free spin symbols on the upper reels, you win 10 free spins using only symbols from these reels. If you land three free spin symbols on the lower reels, you win 10 free spins using only symbols from those reels.

However: during the free spins round, you play with both reel sets simultaneously, meaning you get 5 reels and 6 rows – in other words, the machines are combined and you get a total of 50 paylines that you can win on.

Both wild symbols merge into a 1×6 symbol and then also appear on the reels. The wild symbol will randomly nudge and triggers the Clash feature if it covers an entire reel.

The double-stacked wild symbol functions as a single symbol, meaning it can either:

• Appear naturally covering the reels without nudging (granting you 4 random wilds), or
• Be nudged into position (granting you 2 random wilds in the Clash feature).

A re-spin with all solid wilds locked in place will also be awarded in any spin where you land new solid wilds.

Ragnarok free spins

You win 20 Ragnarok Free Spins either from the Randomizer feature or by landing 3 Free Spin symbols on both the upper and lower reels simultaneously. These free spins function like regular free spins, with one key exception: they exclusively use high-paying symbols from both reel sets.

The best part? There are no low-paying symbols, and the merged wild symbols will always nudge whenever some of them land on the reels

Randomizer

When you land 3 Free Spin symbols on either the upper or lower reels AND 2 Free Spin symbols on the opposite reel set, this triggers the Randomizer feature. This is essentially a bonus wheel that can award you either:

Summary

It might have sounded like I dismissed Age of Asgard at the beginning of this review, but that was never my intention. Once you’ve played a few rounds on this slot, you’ll instinctively realize that there’s a lot here that works really well—even though the game isn’t particularly brutal in terms of payouts or volatility.

The bonus features in this game work exceptionally well, especially if you manage to trigger them. The extra-large wilds, the Clash feature, and the random wilds are a fantastic combination that comes together brilliantly.

This is simply a very good slot, and the only thing I would have wished for is that Yggdrasil made it even more hard-hitting—because both the gameplay and the theme deserve it. This slot has the potential to become a true classic, and it wouldn’t take much to get there.

A higher max win, multipliers, and maybe even more volatility could have made this game truly massive. But even as it stands, this is a highly playable slot with smooth graphics and great bonus features.
